Green Wave

Holland Manufacturing
Gummed Tape for Sealing Cartons
A special note from the manufacturer:
What makes Green Wave - "Green"
Traditional reinforced tape is laminated with a hot melt adhesive. Holland, Crowell, and Intertape all use similar hot melts and the process for lamination is similar. Rail cars of hot-melt (144,000 lbs) arrive and are completely solid. The rail cars have a re-circulation hot oil system that the tape producer must hook up to and heat the car to 380 degrees. This process requires a tremendous amount of energy. Once the car's contents are in liquid form, the hot melt is pumped into large holding tanks that are outside our building. In these tanks, the hot melt is stored at 380 degrees F until the hot-melt is pumped into the machine pan for a HOT lamination. Storing the hot-melt at 380 degrees F requires more energy than melting the solid 144,000 lbs. At this point the carbon footprint of traditional reinforced water activated tape is very high. In addition to hot melt production having a high carbon footprint; it is not a bio-degradable product. Hot melt is a petroleum bi-product which actually results from the cracking (high energy consumption process) of propane.
Green Wave is laminated with a much "greener" process. The laminate is a proprietary Holland developed bio-degradable cold melt system. Therefore, it is laminated at room temperature; no additional heat source is required. The laminate has no petroleum bi-products in its chemical make up. As a result, the carbon footprint of the product is several magnitude is smaller. In addition to having an environmentally friendly laminate, the Green Wave is a more stable product. In extreme temperatures, the Green Wave will not delaminate like a hot melt tape. Also, the tensile strengths of the Green Wave are higher than the Cobra even though they have the same fiberglass pattern. Adhesive performance will be the same as the Cobra product. The adhesive is a starch base and that is already an environmentally friendly material.
Fiberglass, by itself, is not recyclable or bio-degradable, but is is not a petroleum bi-product. If you have a carton closed with Green Wave tape, the fiberglass is such a low percentage of the overall weight of the carton plus the tape, most recycling companies will accept into the normal corrugated recycling stream. Holland considered using a 100% natural fiber, but the cost is very high and the strength is lower than fiberglass.
The design goal of Green Wave was to create a more environmentally responsible reinforced sealing tape, competitively priced with the same 0erformance (adhesive and strength) as traditional tape. The result of our efforts is a product that drastically reduces energy consumption, exhibits higher tensile strengths (for the same thread pattern), will not delaminate in temperature extremes, and does not contain any petroleum bi-products. Best of all, in a time when everyone is so concerned about economics, Green Wave is competitively priced.
