Picking the Best Gummed Tape Dispenser
There are many models on the market. The right choice depends on your volume, carton style, tape width, and work environment. A well matched gummed tape dispenser improves speed, seal quality, and operator flow.

Better Packages History and Model Lineage
| 1958 | BP555 introduced as a mechanical-electrical unit. Became a legendary workhorse for durability. |
| 1960s |
BP333 manual introduced. Double-brush moistening, reliable shears, bottle, and feed wheel design aligned with BP555. BP556 automatic dispensing without operator intervention. A lower cost stand-in for early case sealers. Strips could dry out if not applied quickly. BP554 Duet allowed two-strip dispensing and supported six-strip H seal applications. |
| 1983 | BP755 launched as the intended successor to BP555. Enclosed moistening, lacked triple-brush system and blade felt oiler pad. Key advantage was wide-tape capability. |
| 1999 |
BP555eS / BP555eL released, plus automatic BP555eSA / BP555eLA. The eSA added hands-free automatic dispensing and unified functions from prior BP555, BP556, and BP554 models. BP554 and BP556 discontinued. Original BP555 discontinued with the move to the BP555e family. |
| 2005 | BP500 created by adding electronics to the BP555S platform. Presets 6 to 45 inch in 3 inch steps, plus 2x, repeat, and random. |
In 2005, Better Packages took the original BP555S platform and added electronics to create the Better Pack BP500. The BP500 dispenses preset lengths from 6" to 45" in 3" increments and includes a doubler (2x) key, a repeat key, and a random key for custom pulls.
In 1999, Better Packages released its newer BP555 family: the BP555eS and BP555eL, along with automatic versions BP555eSA and BP555eLA. The BP555eSA combined the core functions of the earlier BP555, BP556, and BP554, while adding hands-free automatic dispensing for higher-throughput packing stations.

The BP333, introduced in the 1960s, became the top selling manual unit thanks to its double brush moistening system, reliable cutting shears, bottle, and feed wheel design shared with the BP555 lineage.
The BP555 was introduced in December 1958 as a mechanical-electrical machine and remained in production for nearly 42 years. When the BP755 series arrived in 1983 as the intended successor, it did not retain every BP555 hallmark. Missing were triple brush moistening, a blade felt pad oiler for automatic lubrication, and some of the tank-like durability that made the original BP555 a legend. The old style BP555 was widely considered the best of its era before Better Packages discontinued it in 1999 with the launch of the BP555e series.
Building on the BP555 platform in the 1960s, Better Packages manufactured the BP556 and BP554. The BP556 dispensed tape automatically without operator intervention, and for a time it served as a lower cost alternative to fully automatic case sealers, which were not yet common. The tradeoff was dry out. If the dispensed strip was not applied within a few seconds, the tape would begin to dry and become unusable. The BP554 Duet enabled two strip dispensing and excelled for the six strip H seal method when all openings on a regular slotted carton needed to be closed. Both the BP554 and BP556 were discontinued in 1999.
The BP755e presents a clean, enclosed design and is one of the few machines today that will dispense 4 inch wide tape. It uses an enclosed moistening system and lacks the felt oiler pad on the cutter blades. It also omits a few BP555e functions in exchange for the wide tape capability, which is the key reason to choose it for oversized or heavy duty seals.
Marsh MSSC
In December 2005, Marsh refreshed the line with the TD2100 series and discontinued older units like the manual 5HT and Electra Electronic. The TD2100 series features a two piece guillotine cutter with a safety bracket and a large 70 ounce bottle. The TDE110 offers a simple two button length entry by inches, while the TDH gives you the pull handle manual approach.
