Roll Coders include a wide range of contact coding systems which are characterized by cylindrical print drums which hold rubber printing dies. The print drums on these coders are friction driven, usually by a pair of rubber friction bearer rings which ride on the surface of the product being marked. The inking system on a typical roll coder is usually an ink roller which is mounted tangent to the print drum. As the printing dies are rotated past the ink roll, a thin film of ink is applied to the surface of the rubber dies and then transferred to the surface of the product. In essence, this form of coding can be defined as rotary rubber stamping and anything from simple dates and product codes to elaborate logos can be applied by this method. Roll coders are available in a variety of styles and sizes and are typically used for marking flat surfaced, conveyed products such as corrugated cartons, lumber, paper products and both porous and non-porous continuous web materials.

There are two types of surfaces we print on:

Porous - Surfaces where the ink is absorbed into the surface of the item being printed. Paper, cardboard, and wood are types of surfaces.
Non-Porous - Surfaces where the ink cannot be absorbed and dries on top of the item being printed. Glass, metal and plastics are types of surfaces.

There are two types of printing:

Non-Indexing or Random - An indexing roll coder uses a spring-loaded print drum that returns to the same position after each print. This allows codes to be applied in a consistent location on each carton, making indexing coders ideal for conveyor systems with spaced cartons. A gap between cartons is required for the mechanism to reset, with larger gaps needed at higher conveyor speeds.
Indexing or Anti-Repeat - A non-indexing roll coder rotates freely and stops in random positions after printing. These machines are typically used on continuous web materials or tightly spaced cartons where no gap exists between products. Since print registration is not controlled, codes are usually printed multiple times to ensure at least one complete mark appears on each product. If an Anti-Repeat option is available, this will prevent the printer from printing more than once.
